Clevedon School is a Year 1 – 8 full Primary school with a roll of approximately 380 children. The school is in a rural setting, 15km from Manukau City. The local community consists of agricultural and lifestyle settings. The majority of pupils come from Clevedon and surrounding villages and is the school of choice for many parents. The school is serviced by local bus routes. The school is attractive, with a beautiful environment. It is supported by high parental interest and participation in school life.

We look forward to working with you and welcome your contact regarding comments or concerns.

Vision

Clevedon School will continue to reflect and value our history, tradition, life-style and unique rural character. We will be a school where excellence is both expected and acknowledged. Our staff and children will receive a wide variety of opportunities to develop and will participate in a learning programme where curriculum delivery and student achievement is benchmarked against leading schools and continually improved. Each child will develop the essential life skills required for their future and will be supported and challenged to achieve their individual potential. We will ensure that participation of each child is valued and both co-operation and competition are encouraged. We will actively manage the risks to which children are exposed but accept that eliminating all risk would deny our children the opportunity to develop. The children, staff, parents and community will be united behind the school and will support each other.
In short, we will be recognised as a leading school and the school of choice in our area.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board works hard in the interest of the school and with the CSS (PTA) will regularly seek your support for working bees, funding and school trips.

Absences
To ensure the safety of your child, we ask that parents advise the school if their child is going to be absent. Parents can leave a phone message before school: phone 292 8654 or a message can be sent to the office by a sibling. The school Office Staff will phone the home of any child not accounted for. Parents who bring children to school late or pick up children during school hours are required to fill out and sign the Departure or Late Return Forms kept at the office. A letter is required if the absence is for a length of time.

Agriculture Day

Agriculture Day is an integral Local Curriculum Goal in our Charter.
It is normally held on the first Saturday of Term 4. A booklet containing all relevant information is circulated to families early in Term 3.

Children are encouraged to raise either a lamb, calf, goat or chicken from birth. There is also a display section in the classrooms. Every child is involved and the day is counted as a school day.

Fundraising is undertaken with parent assistance requested. Agriculture Day is a significant event in our year. Parents are asked to plan around it if possible. Children have the opportunity to attend Group Day and the Clevedon A & P Show with their animals to compete against other children from schools in our local area.

Appointments with Class Teachers
Teachers are happy to discuss pupil’s progress at any time during the year. If you wish to meet with the class teacher please call in or telephone to arrange a suitable time when they are free from classroom responsibilities.

Day visits, camps and sports days form the majority of our out of school experiences. They are a valuable extension of the school programme and can involve considerable preparation and organisation.

The School bus is often utilised for trips requiring transport. From time to time, parent assistance with supervision and transport is requested. Most trips are planned in advance and are normally listed in the weekly newsletter. The full school uniform will be worn on all such occasions.

Clothing and Lost Property

We ask parents to name their child’s clothing and belongings. We wish our children to take a pride in their appearance and be responsible for their own property. The school takes no responsibility for loss of items. The lost property is located in Room 1. At the end of each term unnamed, unclaimed clothing will be given to the Uniform Shop to sell as second hand clothing. The school uniform is compulsory. Children must wear a uniform school hat during Terms 1 and 4. If they do not have a hat children must sit in the shade under a tree.

First Aid and Health Treatment to Children

Should a child be injured at school, or become ill, and it is felt that a doctor’s advice is necessary; the parents/caregivers will be contacted immediately. Please ensure the school office has up-to-date emergency numbers which will be used if parents/caregivers cannot be contacted. All staff members are trained In First Aid. Please advise the staff if pupils need to take prescribed medication for a temporary ailment.
Note that teachers are not permitted to administer aspirin, disprin (or any analgesic). You are asked to forward emergency medicines such as asthma and bee allergy medication to school if necessary. Some children have allergies or other conditions that require medication. This must be handed in at the office.

Please ensure that we have:

• Parent authorisation
• Medication labelled clearly
• Regular replacement of regular medication
• Notification if medication is to be discontinued

A record is kept of all incidents that require a visit to the Sick Bay. A slip is sent home with the child to inform parents of what happened and what treatment was given, except where only a plaster is needed. You will be phoned if your child is sent to the Sick Bay feeling unwell. Please collect sick children promptly.

In the event of your child contacting an infectious or notifiable disease or condition, please contact the school.

The Public Health Nurse visits the school once a month. It is important that the school is informed of any problems your child may have and you are asked to supply any relevant information on enrolment. If any other problems occur, please notify the school.

Inoculation programmes are also run and Parental Consent is always sought in advance of these.

Fundraising

Fundraising for school equipment and ventures is essential. As a Decile 10 school, we are funded the least of any state school. While this assumes that because of the socio-economic make up of our community is higher than a Decile 1 for instance, it does mean that community funds are essential. The PTA in partnership with the Board of Trustees attempts to provide opportunities to raise extra funds. Being a member is fun!

Telecom/Clear donate a percentage of your household toll accounts to the school of your choice. Forms to arrange to nominate our school are available from the office, or phone 0800724665—“School Connections”

Hearing and Vision Checks

Once a year all new entrants hearing and vision is checked. In addition, children at other levels requiring follow up are attended to. Parents can request a check if they suspect deficiencies in these areas.

Year 7 and 8 pupils travel by bus to Rosehill Intermediate School for specialist Technology lessons.
Children must wear shoes.

Library

Books are an important factor in development of your child’s reading.
All classes make regular use of the library. All books are self chosen and may have been selected for interest rather than at your child’s reading level. We suggest that you share such books with your child.

The library is open daily. All children may use the library and have two books out at a time for up to 14 days loan. The library is fully automated. Children have a digital bar code that links their borrowing to a computer. Please care for books. Books damaged beyond repair or lost will be replaced at the full cost in the first year of issue and $10.00 per book thereafter.

Money

Money for any trips, stationery, or other activities is given to the class teacher and this is checked off and sent to the office.

A newsletter is emailed or sent home weekly on a Wednesday, with eldest and only children. A memo of upcoming events will be sent out in between newsletters if necessary.
Please inform the school of your e-mail address if you wish to receive the newsletter electronically.

Clevedon School Supporters (CSS)

We have a very strong and supportive CSS who is involved in many aspects of school life. This group is made up of volunteers from our Parent community.
The CSS actively promotes social events, fundraising and communication between home and school. On many occasions they provide quality hospitality for special days. The aim of such events is to increase interaction between the school, home and community in order to fundraise for additional resources. From time to time ‘Working Bees’ are held to assist the school in moving forward.

The CSS welcomes anyone with a willingness to help. It is an energetic stimulating and fun group who really makes the difference. Meetings of the committee are held twice each term and the major focus is fundraising and assisting with school events. We encourage ‘new parents’ to come along and meet the CSS.

We also operate a ‘registered Parent helper’ system, so that you may offer assistance for school functions, without being involved at committee level – this is a very effective means of helping with school activities when you are able. For further information contact the school office.

Parking

Do not leave your car unattended in the drop off zone.
This is the area adjacent to the kerb, at the front entrance and is for the buses.

If you park where your children must cross traffic to reach the car, please get out of your vehicle and escort them across the road. Be on the lookout for children and do not block the gateways.

Production

The bi-annual school production is a huge feature of school life. We try to involve as many students as possible.

Reporting to Parents

Personal interviews are usually held in Term 2 and 3 where parents and teachers can discuss each child in depth and develop strategies to assist with their learning. In Term 4 a written report is issued.

School Contributions

The Board of Trustees reviews our school contributions annually. These donations go towards providing quality education for your child.

Donations are currently set at:

1 child $60/term or $240/year
2 children $90/term or $360/year
3+ children $115/term or $460/year

There is a Code of Conduct Booklet available in the School Office.
