Term 1 3rd February 2010

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school and especially to Room 10, 2010.

After such a long spell of beautiful holiday weather we are both keen to start the new school year.  Both teachers in Room 10 are looking forward to meeting new parents and to re-establish contacts with others.  We welcome visitors to our classroom to see what we are doing and if you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to come and discuss them with us.

We have regular days in the classroom each week.  Cheryl Wilkinson will be in the classroom Monday, Tuesday and Friday and Hannah Wynne will be in on Wednesday and Thursday.  We will both be teaching Room 10 until James Christie returns from the UK in Term 3.

This is our second Year of working together and we are very much looking forward to working together as a team again.  We both work very hard to make sure that the week flows almost as if there were one teacher.  We regularly meet to establish routines and to discuss planning and any concerns so that we can best meet the needs of all the children in the class.

During the first few weeks we will be getting to know each other and establishing routines.  The Integrated Topic will begin in Week 3 and this term we will be studying the exciting topic of “Volcanoes”, with a possible trip to Auckland Museum.  Until then we will be looking at the topic “Ourselves”

Swimming will be every day so swimming togs need to come to school each day.  If you do not wish your child to swim please send a note.  It is very hot at the moment and we look forward to a cooling swim.

Reading groups are very flexible at the moment and based on records and information received from Term 4, 2009.  Don’t be concerned if the books do not seem to be at the correct level for your child as each child will be tested for their correct reading level during the first couple of weeks of term.  Levels often change over the long holidays.

Mathematics will be taught daily.  The Strand topic for this term will be Statistics.

Spelling will begin approximately in week 3, so that this gives us time to find the correct level for your child.  They will bring home new words and activities every Tuesday and the test will happen the following Monday.

Writing will take place daily, and we will be looking at Recounts and Narrative Writing.  Friday is Poetry day and the children will look at a different poem every week.

We look forward to meeting you.

Kind Regards

Hannah Wynne and Cheryl Wilkinson
